I don’t understand why people think we are just, not signing a striker. I think too many people play football manager these days and don’t really know the game. Just because we want players, Doesn’t mean we can afford them, or that they want to come. I think people assume we just go and buy one like in a supermarket of footballers. ‘Excuse me what isle are the 29 goal a season strikers on’
We have been knocked back for a few strikers and got really close to a good one who went elsewhere for more money. We can’t sign what won’t sign.

Feel a bit for Hird - the lads just out of his depth. You could see that from his first minute against Derby. Just not comfortable at this level. Dunn should take some responsibility for it - everyone else can see it.

Not out of his depth. That would be an insult to his career. If anything - in the declining years of his career. He was used on a utility basis last year once Platt arrived. He covered a number of positions and was very good slotting in a position on a temporary basis.

My guess is that is how he is ideally seen by Dunn. As someone that can enable a defence to hold its shape without compromising its formation. I still think hes a useful asset. Just not a 90 minute player.

On the subject of which, have being watching the Chelsea-Liverpool game and Gary Neville used a term to describe Chelseas lack of edge that I thought fitted us to a tee. The phrase used was "holding their shape passively". I take this to mean that whilst the team keeps their shape well, that there is little linkage between the defence and attack. There is no fluidity. The danger with this approach is that it can quickly become attack versus defence once you give the ball back to the opposition.

No he wasn’t. He played centre half unless he was injured/suspended and was part of our first choice back three along with Brough and Platt. He never played full back or shifted into midfield etc.

Hird played the same position every week just about part of a back 3 with Platt and Brough and Jones for a few games when he joined on loan.

That's not true - he consistently was a member of the back 3 last season. Can't recall him ever playing in a position which wasn't in the 3 centre-half positions we'd use in our formations.

I never saw him play anywhere other than on the right side of a 3 man central defence after Matt Platt arrived, SB and he made 33 league appearances out of a possible 37 so was an absolute regular.

However, as you say, he's now 33 so is getting towards the veteran stage. Even last season I saw him make one or two mistakes generally being caught in possession on the touchline but I think he was a useful member of the team as he's comfortable on the ball and is a good passer for a defender although not as quick as our other central defenders.

Unfortunately, he's made one howler and another misjudgement this season which have cost us points but we've got several players a lot worse than Sam Hird and he isn't one I'd write off.
