Time to Put Up or Shut Up

Post by Ilford Mouse » Wed Sep 25, 2013 11:52 am

It's pretty clear from the way most of the threads seem to end up blaming the BoD for the club's current predicament that a lot of people are ready for a change. As a member's club this can be made to happen. However at the AGM in August there didn't appear to be any mood of rebellion. Could this be that most of the disgruntled fans aren't members or, probably worse than that, are members who like to moan on here but can't be a£$%d to turn up and air their grievances at the AGM?

Well here's a plan. The next AGM is scheduled for 6th December 2013, just over 2 months away. If you think you could do a better a job than the current board propose a vote of no confidence and put yourselves forward for election. If 2 months is too long to wait why not call an EGM and do the same?

If you're not currently a member stump up £20 to be a member and gain the right to attend the AGM and do the above. That way you could help the club in two ways - financially and with the benefit of your time, knowledge and expertise. Or is it easier to whine from the outside and blame people who have been willing to put their heads above the parapet and try to keep our club alive?

For the avoidance of doubt I am a member and have been from the start. I have no affiliation to any board member past or present. I recognise that things aren't perfect and there are many things which could have been done differently and better.

I don't have the spare time, the knowledge or skills to run a football club but I would willingly support anyone who can demonstrate that they have these attributes if they want to put themselves forward for the board.

The ball's in your court. Time to step out from behind your keyboards and put up or shut up!

So unless we have "the spare time, the knowledge or skills to run a football club" we can no longer discuss "...all things Barrow AFC..." on the Forum?
We will foller the soccer, over land and sea...

i think mr mouse you are forgetting the people on the board put themselves up for election, therefore you have to take criticism because no one forced them!

lets be honest are you saying that our club is being run well? if not i can`t see what you are trying to achieve and by the way when questions are asked at the agm it`s like talking to an m.p. you never get a straight answer!

the way it`s all going we will not have much to "moan" about soon!

Isn't it funny that the people who put up posts like this never have the time or the skills themselves?

Obviously I'm not saying things shouldn't be discussed on the forum because I have put this subject up for discussion. What I find frustrating is that there is constant criticism, rumour and innuendo directed towards the board by people who moan about it being a member's club in name only but don't do anything about it. I don't know whether posters are or aren't members but if all those that are disillusioned were to be members they might be able to effect the regime change they clamour for. It should be remembered that regime change doesn't always bring you what you wish for, as has been witnessed in Egypt recently.

My comment about time, knowledge and skills refers to what I believe are needed by any prospective board member. I'm sure there must be people out there who have these and the best interests of the club at heart rathe than a short term commitment to funding of the team while they make a land grab.

My question is are any of those people willing to put themselves forward to gain the support of the members?

Please feel free to discuss.

Hit the nail on the head, Nige. The current board were willing to put themselves up for election and were elected. Of course critiscism has to be expected in such a position. Perhaps that's why so few others are willing to put themselves forward for election.

I don't think all aspects of the running of the club have been done well. Some of the failings have been down to naievity others down to bad planning. Don't forget that this BoD was in charge through probably our most successful period in non-league football. I try to take a balanced view of things and while our club seems to be in a dire situation at the moment I remember the times when it was far worse.

I would welcome a change for the better but dread a change for the worse. At the moment it appears that our most recently elected director "Uncle Peter" is starting to make a difference in some areas. Credit is due to him for being willing to have a go. Are there any more like him out there willing to try?

By admitting to not having the time or skills I am at least recognising that I would probably be no better than what we have got. Until something/someone turns up who can, and is willing, to spare the time to juggle all the balls needed to run a footbal club I will PUT UP with those who are at least currently trying.

Most people wont have the skill set to run a football club or business for that matter so cant put up as you put it, and as for the shut up because people don't have these skills doesn't mean they have to shut up either. The have a god given right to express themselves if they see poor running of a football club. We all criticise the prime minister but do we have the credentials to be the PM? no we don't but we have a democratic right to challenge his decisions and eventually vote him off.
Silly post.

Again a nail hit on the head. Members of Barrow AFC have a democratic right to challenge the board's decisions and eventually vote them off. We only get that opportunity with governments every 4 - 5 years but as a member's club all it needs is for an EGM to be called. Perhaps I should have left the "shut up" off the thread but I still think there must be some disillusioned individuals out there with the necessary talents to "put up". Once again I'll point you in the direction of "Uncle Peter".

You're entitled to express your opinion and to criticise, as am I.
