Man Utd in 1984

Post by Neil Doherty » Tue Apr 29, 2014 9:46 am

Sorry if this is the wrong section but I have been asked a question by someone about the purpose of a match against Manchester Utd at Holker Street in 1984 in which Norman Whiteside scored a goal? Norman has asked for a dinner he is speaking at, it was a bit before my time!! thanks Neil .

I cant remember the reason but I was there... Was it not just a pre season friendly when the big boys used to take time out to play local teams...unlike today`where its all about money and heading off to far out places like asia, africa, usa, mars, saturn etc..

I think big Gordon Mcqueen was in the there too?? Im old and my memory is like a fish..."bob" "bob"

I'm pretty sure it was someone's testimonial but can't remember who. United won 4-0 and Whiteside did score, and Gordon McQueen was there, as was Lou Macari. Can't remember much else mind.

That was the year Brian Kidd began his glorious reign. Presumably, though I don't know, he would have been involved in getting them here.
It all comes 'round again.

Alex Stepney played the first half hour.

Norman Whiteside is the best player of offside that I ever came across. His timing was perfect.

I bet Kevin Thomas was delighted when he saw that team sheet on his big day.

Noticed Davis Platt on that list... signed that year as a young lad.. bet utd wished they kept hold of him?

Gone are the days when the big boys used to support things like this, some pretty big names on the team sheet!!

Thats why I love Barrow so much.. a club that is about football, the community and not money..(to some degree)

I'm more impressed by the fact that Barrow had a Lada spare parts dealership!
