Good Week or Bad Week?

Post by Suffolk Blue » Wed Oct 16, 2019 4:17 pm

Reflecting on the last few days it is tempting to see events in a predictably negative way i.e. the shambolic behaviour by an opposing team towards playing us, the loss of a record breaking opportunity, the loss of revenue and the disrupted momentum, plus the accompanying frustration and anger ultimately spilling over into overly aggressive comments leading to us being demonised (again) on social media as aggressors rather than victims. All this followed by a failed dawn raid on our manager from a club 18 places below us in the same league using a wad of cash as bait.

A few might be tempted to see conspiracy in all of this whilst the “cup half empty” element of supporters (including myself probably) might just shrug their shoulders and suggest that these things always seem to afflict us whenever we begin to experience any level of success. God is not a BAFC supporter. So a bad week indeed.

However, lest we all get typically morose it worthwhile pointing out that there’s an alternative, more positive way to view these events. The disappointment with Dover was partly driven by a view that they were ripe for a beating with club records within reach. Whether this would have happened or not, I cant remember a time when a Dover team would have turned up at HS with a bookies expectation of defeat, and if their behaviour en route did indicate a lack of eagerness to get to us that only re-enforces how our team have come to be viewed.

Whilst I can fully understand the Chairman's frustration at lost revenue, the background to it is one of dramatically increasing gates (this should be continued on Saturday also). If this fixture had been replicated even 12 months ago we wouldn’t have derived any revenue from pies and little from catering in general because the gate expectation would've been halved. In fact the whole incident would probably have passed off without much rancour.

IE is right to worry about momentum but the plain fact is that as a run gets longer and longer it inevitably risks falling victim to a lack of continuity and momentum. Seven consecutive wins is exceptional - even for a very good team. We will lose at some point, maybe on Saturday, maybe in our next league fixture. However we’re no longer a team that should fear that a loss will preface a downward spiral in confidence or form. It should be obvious to all that we are better than that even if some of our opponents still see us in that way.

Lastly the attempt to lure IE by Fylde was about as predictable as it gets. It may not be the last either from the NL this season. However it did flush the issue out into the open and I for one am glad it was Fylde that stuck their head above the parapet first. I thought the way it was dealt with was really good and suggested strongly that the issue had been discussed previously between the Chairman and IE (undoubtedly in the context of IEs contract) to ensure than there would be no protracted media discussion. In fact I thought it was spot on and was put out there as much to warn off other NL teams as it was to tell the Fylde owner to do one.

So maybe actually quite a good week. It all depends on your perspective.

So Bad week or Good week?

Another good point from this week, the top 3 all managed to play and not put any points on the board....
Gives us a game in hand against the team that cant be arsed......

Good week in that we keep hold of our prized asset, but bad in how Dover and the media have over milked the situation. And for some reason keep fanning the flames.
Except for a flippant remark on social media by an obvious youth that is beyond the clubs control and someone venting their understandable frustrations on passing Dovers sole representative I think we have been excellent.
We just need to distance ourselves now from further comments, let the football do the talking and hold our heads up high.

Bad week.
I dont think we’ve come out well from the postponement from a “neutrals perspective” looking in. Apologising for “Unnamed Club official giving abuse” being the final bit of news you don’t want to read on the whole episode.
On the pitch, (forget the rest of the opposition dropping points, that means nothing unless we can take advantage of it), we lost momentum leading into the game when we are in top form and I hope there is no impact from this going into Saturday.
We will have to rearrange this fixture which no one really wants to be doing at this stage of the season.
All the lost build up off the pitch leading up to the game. As Hornby says, you can’t replicate that.

So, bad week

Sounds a bit fishy to me Mark 😁

As good a week as it was bad in equal measures I think. A ridiculous situation caused by Dovers very amateurish (and suspect) travel arrangements.
A good week in that we never lost any ground on the teams above us.
A bad week because a lad (doesn’t matter about the age) has done a stupid thing that gave Dover and the media something to deflect their own stupidity.
A good week because we managed to fend off Fylde, although I suspect there’ll be more fending off needed this season.
A bad week because the club felt the need to apologise over something caused originally by a club that thought it was ok to set off from London and arrive at Barrow and kick a ball from the station to the ground and use that as a warm up routine.

It could’ve been worse, but it probably could’ve been a lot better.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Ah Ian. On the black and white scale you are definitely mid grey. A man after my own heart.

Bad week definitely; we’ve really come across badly in most media coverage of the incidents around Saturday which is all other clubs fans etc etc will see
And hopefully it won’t affect us but last year we were blooming awful the week after a postponed game

Sorry to keep butting in HK. Attitudes tend to reflect allegiances. If you go onto the Woking fans forum you'll find a quite well developed thread about the incident which is very supportive of our position. However they dont like Dover and would probably stay on side if we dropped a nuke on the Crabble. Supporters are a fickle bunch.

Bad week. We had it set up for one of the biggest crowds in a decade and lost thousands. Unlikely we can replicate something which took weeks to organise to that point.

Dover were allowed to deflect any blame by virtue signalling, an over sensitive kit man and some idiot teenager who likely doesn't even go that often mouthing off on Twitter.

Agree 100% We have kept our manager despite an attempt by a cash rich club to grab him , Dover have shown themselves to be a bunch of southern whiners who could not organise a p*** up in a brewery let alone a trip to Barrow

Good Week
It's a good week to rip up the online ticket and pay again!
More ££££ for the club, what's not to like :)
We're all supporters on here. Let's leave the negative comments to the away fans

You've said this a few times, really not sure what you're reading but it seems highly selective...

off the field so so - If it's wasn't for the twitter idiot and the kitman thing we would have had the high ground and Dover might have been brought to task over it - but that's likely to get swept under the carpet now....
On the field - Very Good week, top 3 all lost and even Woking let in a 96th minute equaliser to stay below us. Short of us playing and winning the on pitch happenings could hardly have gone any better for us.
