Barrow played Chelsea in the Fa cup in 1946 ,the photo is Armstrong scoring against the Barrow keeper Roxburgh the result was 5-0.

-January 10 1948 saw Barrow travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea in
Round Three of the tournament. At the time the Blues were in Division One - the
equivalent of the Premiership - and a crowd of 44,336 turned out to see the game. Barrow
had reached this stage by defeating Carlisle United at home 3-2 and then non-League
Runcorn away thanks to a goal from Wilf Livingstone, later the much-respected secretary
of the club. Whilst Barrow were in the upper reaches of the Third Division North the
reality was that this was always going to be a difficult task. The 5-0 defeat was probably predictable. Barrow goalkeeper Andy Roxburgh was singled out for his efforts, including a second-half penalty save.-

MATCH REPORT: Daily Express, Monday 12 January 1948: Little Bobby Campbell,
Chelsea right-winger, was No.1 man at Stamford Bridge, where Barrow made a quick
exit from the Cup. Campbell started off by making a goal for Ken Armstrong, once more
at centre-forward; added the second on his own, and had a foot in the other
three scored by Armstrong, Goulden, and Bowie. Only forward who did
not score was Tommy Jones, the former Wrexham winger, and he
had his chance from a penalty. He missed.

My late brother in-law played in that game, Jimmy " Crasher" Kendall. Scored a goal but was ruled offside.
A great raconteur. Reckons Chelsea wanted to sign him but he told them sorry to disappoint you but he would rather be a big fish in a small pond than a little fish in a big one.
Settled back in Gateshead where he came from but had the Barrow and Gateshead colours at his funeral.

Report says it was £45, not sure how much nowadays.

I have the programme too. I think I paid about £50 for it but it was over 10 years ago.

The programme also shows our No. 6 as being one George Summerbee, father of Mike and grandfather of Nicky. George played over 100 times for Barrow in the late 40s. Sadly he passed away from Addisons disease at a very young age in 1952.

Yes. I can give you another story from the same game too. I will message you. He was a Geordie and larger than life character.
Nothing to do with the Chelsea game but when my sister had her last child Brian Clough didn't send him one bottle of champagne---he sent him a case of the stuff. My nephew was at Nottingham Forrest at the time.
