Extra time
Extra time
Due to the new directive from, I believe, the FA regarding time wasting injuries etc a large number of games this weekend had up to and beyond 15 minutes of extra time played (Barrow being one of them). Sunderland's game today has had 13 minutes extra added onto the second half! By my reckoning we will be playing an extra 6 games or so in the season if this is to continue in this vein. Think fitness and late goals will be a factor this season.

Re: Extra time
Carlisle were into the 15th minute of time added before it ended yesterday. IMO won’t last more than a couple of months before it’s toned down

Re: Extra time
Can't think it's a bad thing at all. There were incredulous shouts of "how long?" when the board went up at the end of each half at Prenton Park yesterday. It was nerve wracking as we were protecting a 2-1 lead, but overall I think it's a move in the right direction. The time wasting tactics of some teams, that we all hate, are now literally, a waste of time, as many extra minutes will be added, and there's nothing to be gained from trying to frustrate the flow of the game. Refs have been told to book players who are obviously trying to hold things up, more so than previously. Also backchat will get punished more e.g George Ray yesterday. All in all I think it's a move in the right direction, and we'll have to get used to it.andyg wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 6:56 pm Due to the new directive from, I believe, the FA regarding time wasting injuries etc a large number of games this weekend had up to and beyond 15 minutes of extra time played (Barrow being one of them). Re: Extra time
All but 2 games in the whole EFL exceeded 100 minutes. Northampton went to 22 added minutes:

17:19 train from Barrow might be a stretch.

What about today's Community Shield? Arsenal's equaliser came in the 100th minute, and they won the penalty shootout 4-1.

Guardiola is upset because they didn't ask him for permission to make the changes and Arteta says they are going to have to "train" for the changes!bluessupporter wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 8:58 pm What about today's Community Shield? Re: Extra time
If it eventually cuts out all of the 3 minute goal celebrations, people feigning injuries taking an age to get off the pitchwhensubstituted etc.( Mansfield for one springs to mind ) ,then I'm all for it ,let's be honest We've all been to home games and witnessed these antics !

Re: Extra time
After a few weeks when players and managers get used to it i think you will see the number of added minutes reducing. Players will quickly realise it’s pointless fieghning injury to time waste as it’s all getting added on. The same after a goal is scored. All this running over to the corner flag after scoring will hopefully stop. Yes by all means celebrate with your team mates but let’s get back and get on with the game. Supporters have a quicker game to watch and under the new rules the players won’t be playing the injury time lengths like they were on Saturday

Re: Extra time
Like most rules it will work in some cases and not in others.
In badly contested or fractious games it’s bound to lead to additional unnecessary red cards. I also notice that two of the five games on Saturday that played the most added time were at Sutton and Barnsley, games in which the home sides were already 5 and 6 goals to the good at 90 minutes..

Re: Extra time
Would that indicate the away sides were trying to waste time to stem the flow of the home side?

Re: Extra time
It obviously applies to everyone, including us! We have been pretty adept at keeping the ball out of play when we’re in a slender lead and it suited it us.blue nige wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 9:42 am If it eventually cuts out all of the 3 minute goal celebrations, people feigning injuries taking an age to get off the pitchwhensubstituted etc.( Mansfield for one springs to mind ) ,then I'm all for it ,let's be honest We've all been to home games and witnessed these antics !
Can’t blame anyone for having done it, but now the FA have acted and for the better.
It’ll probably take a bit of time to settle with the refs identifying what’s time wasting and what isn’t - e.g. a goalie collecting a weak shot, and falling down unnecessarily, and staying down for a while, then eventually getting up, and taking more time to distribute the ball. Farman has been brilliant at that in the past! Not sure whether it is actually time wasting, as the ball is not out of play.
Detailed guidance from the FA would help teams and fans understand what is permissible, and what is not, and specific guidance might make the referees more consistent as to how much time to add on.
As a general observation, the fitter the team, the better chance they have now games could regularly last 100-110 minutes. Also use of subs might become more tactical.
It will be interesting to see if teams like Mansfield act any differently with the new rules in place.
On Saturday I didn’t notice any old style blatant time wasting from Barrow or Tranmere, but significant periods were added on at the end of both halves, to the surprise of many. Goal celebrations and substitutions were given.
Let’s hope it’s for the better of the game in general.

Re: Extra time
It might well do Hadrian. All I’m suggesting is that the ref is allowed a little discretion
Even with these additions the ball is only going to be active for 60-70 minutes. So why not play the match until 90 minutes of active play has occurred.? Wouldn’t that be right? Fans could bring their sleeping bags.
Regulations are rigid. Rules can be adjusted. I’m confident that this one, like so many others before it will be modified..
