January Signings?

Post by blue nige » Wed Dec 04, 2024 12:44 pm

Here we go ,what are people's thoughts ( realistic 😀)?

Obviously we need a Striker, who is a focal figure who can hold up play and score goals, we need at LEAST one possibly 2 central midfielders, unfortunately much as I like Foley his body s now letting him know his time at this level is limited, and we also need a midfielder to give us much more focus on pushing the team forward, it's no coincidence we're conceding late goals, Campbell/ gotts work really hard BUT we can't replace them as we have absolutely NO ONE on the bench!

We need at least 1 decent striker, a decent winger and a creative, attacking midfield player.

Expect one or two to go.

If we are realistically going to get in to the top 7 we need a Goalscorer- don’t know where we get one in January window.

Me too. If one or two of those out of contract in the summer have indicated they wont sign a new contract better to sell them in January if they are willing to go rather than them going for nothing in the summer.. Im thinking Cambell, Spence or Robbie Gotts.

The fact they are stalling on signing a new contract (if they have been offered one) shows they either want more money, been offered more money elsewhere or want a new start. Letting them go in January is folly if it turns out its costs us our place in the FL.

In league 2 it’s rare that a player of the calibre and age of the three ive mentioned sign new contracts to extend stays at clubs. Most run contracts down to see what offers come there way and if like Whitfield they secure a move to a higher level they leave for nothing

Then let no more than 1 go , we'd have no chance of recruiting anyone of their calibre unless we pay a lot of money so they're would have to be a lot of wheeling and dealing in such a short period of time!
To be honest I'm really disappointed we're in this debate it was obvious to everyone we'd be short of a decent target man ,and be short in central midfield ( we even let Foley go then had to re sign him) unbelievable 😞

If we are keeping the same formation; another centre back (I assume we will just extend Stokes deal instead), a big athletic/physical central midfielder, a decent left winger (ideally with plenty of pace) and of course a striker or two
Not much then!

Probably have more luck in the loan market in January, similar to the Stockton situation last year. Few in few out to balance the books.

IIRC one of Pete Wilds remits was to sign young hungry players improve them and then sell them on. The owners have pumped hundreds of thousands into the club and the Chelsea game aside have recouped very little. They may want a return on a player they have invested in IE salary One safeguard about selling a player In January is that you can negotiate a sell on clause should that player improve again and attract championship or premier league interest and go for a fee.

I agree if we know players are going to leave in the summer for nothing, might as well sell them in January and get a fee and a possible sell on fee, surely that makes economical sense.

Like to see two Strikers in at least🙏 Chris Conn-Clarke hasn’t made the breakthrough since moving to Peterborough in the summer so they might allow a loan. Only seen Linney a couple of times and he impressed me, he definitely won’t come cheaply though as Alty still have aspirations of play offs. Attacking midfielder hopefully the rest falls into place. Not wholesale changes but tweaks where needed.
