I can tell you where the sand has gone----into the dugouts. Seats and floors look as if they are in the middle of the Sahara.

Where was I Today? Laid up, with some strong painkillers as I've trapped a nerve in my back.anthony wrote:peter. where were you today along with your helpers. hope you all turn up tomorrow
Fingers crossed it will have improved by tomorrow but if not it's unlikely I'll be there.
Apologies if this causes any issues.

sorry to hear your back is giving you problems peter. but we did not get any of the help you have been promising to assist with the dance boards and other work today.Uncle Peter wrote:Where was I Today? the dance boards are against the front of the stand and are awaiting your helpers to return them under the stand.
moving them twice last year two stewards hurt their backs, again today one pulled his moving them from the pitch. we were not going to risk anyone else getting hurt after being at the ground from 7:30 and not leaving till 17:20 so I feel they have done over and above their role for this weekend.

Mike, I will sort the boards. I tried my hardest to get some extra pairs of hands down but unfortunately wasnt able too, despite being on with it for the past 4 weeks.
Many thanks to those that gave up their day to help out with this, much appreciated.

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
Never too sure who this dance board thing falls under Mike, we've been asked in the past to fix the dance boards but it DEFINITELY doesn't fall under ground maintenace & we couldn't ask anyone to fix these boards when we have things like storm damaged walls, the press box or BST office to do first.
Does the club actually own the dance boards? do the club make anything out of it? We've never had a straight answer to these questions.
Good day to have it on whoever makes out of it, looked like there were plenty of people going in & I hope it can be incorporated alongside the pitch makeover next season.

We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
Ian it's alright saying it's hoped it can be incorported in with the pitch work next season BUT it is left to the few people who are willing to help out. I left the ground at 18-45 as I stayed to help Darren Herbert who put 12 hours in yesterday and looked absolutely shattered.
A lot of the basic stuff is being left now I find due to other things being undertaken. Refitting of places.
Ray, one of the turnstile operators used to go down and litter pick before the volunteers took over so he stopped going down as it was done when he arrived. Now the volunteers have dropped off nothing seems to be done on that side of things. Weeds are getting knee high and the place is looking like it did when I first started the cleaning---neglected.
After the initial flurry of enthusiasm the volunteers seem to have dropped off to a handful of willing people.
Dirty. leaking toilets and weeds are the things that people notice when entering the ground.
I hope things can be addressed before the start of the season.

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
Just as a matter of interest Mike who did the boards before the GM volunteers existed and also don't the stewards lift the boards in and out when they are hired to other venues? They are mainly young men and it shouldn't be too hard a job for them. I bet those bin bags of empty bottles I was carrying to the skips were heavier than those boards and I am a heck of a lot older than they are.
Right now I have probably alienated both the GM people and the stewards I will get back down to the ground now and continue my letter picking and cleaning.
It's what grannies do.

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
You are right Elaine, we seem to have lost quite a few volunteers over the last few months, various reasons for that. Some people put in that much time last year that I suppose jobs built up at home, others just seem to have lost interest, others have give reasons which didn't really make sense but looking like they just don't want to carry on - which is fine.
There's still half a dozen or so carrying on with work but that doesn't include the weeding - there just aren't enough interested so not much we can do about that. I think your pointing out that we're doing "refitting of places" instead of the basics like the weeds & cleaning but one of the re-fits is the BST office, quite an important area for the future of the club.
Back to the boards, it's just a massive grey area. Surely ALL the people involved in the gala day should be responsible for cleaning up afterwards because I can't see the club allowing that to go ahead in the future if the club themselves are left with the mess at the end of it!

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
To be fair to the dance people considering there must have been nearly 2000 people in the ground there wasn't too much mess especially on the pitch but I would ban anyone who has red feathers as part of their costumes in future!!!!!!! They must have been nearly bald by the time they left the ground. Not to mention those blooming loom bands that are all the rage. I was like a scene of crime policeman today on my hands and knees crawling round that pitch picking those up.
4 hours but well worth it to see it looking better.
Stand cleaned, pitch cleaned so tomorrow it will be sweeping up all the cigarette ends that are everywhere.
If it is Ulverston Carnival on Saturday the dance boards can stay where they are as they will probably be getting picked up on Friday night,as they use them.

Re: Gala Day - and the damage to the pitch
first holkerbird. you worked your socks off yesterday and you put a lot of younger people to shame. but I can assure you the dance boards are a damn site heavier than bin bags. the bags from the bar area should have been removed by the bar staff themselves. as for the stewards duties on the day. it set out as being their for the safety of those attending the event. we then assisted the directors who were responsible for the dance boards. we then as with most things at holker st at that time it some how became the job of the stewards with the assistance of two of the directors. then the directors failed to show up in the mornings and the stewards did the job. for the last god knows how many weeks of the organising the event Peter has promised he had a group of helpers. they never appeared so as discussed at an organising meeting I stated the steward would not be responsible for the boards due to two people injuring their backs last year. we went further than was stated and moved the boards from the pitch. but only to prevent any damage. that is the facts behind the reasoning behind leaving the boards where they are now.
the boards were given to the club by the round table the idea being they would be kept in good condition by the club and hired out to other dance events with the money made to be put in a pot for the maintenance of the boards.
when other organisations hire the boards it is their responsibility to collect/return them it is not/ never has been and never will be the responsibility of the stewards to handle them in any way.
the stewards are only their for match day duties. we have in the past carried out many jobs around the ground such as the painting when all those fans who moaned about not being asked to help out decided they didn't really want to help in any way they just wanted to moan.

Any need to keep having a dig at Pete?
The less said about the stewarding at games the better an absolute shambles sometimes, most haven't got a brain cell between them.
