Having witnessed the stewards once again "steam in" through a large group of fans (very nearly barrelling over a fan carrying his young daughter) my big worry is that the stewards seem to have some sort of gung ho, targetted attitude against certain fans who's face perhaps doesn't fit, and are badly lacking in training of how to properly handle such situations (even if the OP was guilty of whatever heinous crime the stewards thought he'd done (though the ones who were barging past me didn't seem to have a clue themselves) the treatment and safety of other fans in the surrounding area was completely and utterly disregarded)....

I was going to start a thread myself regarding stewarding and the unneccarily aggressive and down right rude treatment I witnessed a couple of stewards give to a group of young lads stood by the tunnel on Tuesday night, but to be honest sounds like there are bigger issues to sort out...

Conversation I had with a steward during the incident:

Me: What's he done wrong?

Steward: I don't know.

Me: Well what are you doing here then?

Steward: I don't know.

Yet despite seemingly not knowing what the person had done wrong the steward still persisted with barging through people to try and get to him. Beggars belief that they can do all that and not actually know why.

Understand where you're coming from Mike, but in this case they really did just get it wrong.

What baffles me most is that when the stewards make a mistake it must be the fans fault and there is no apology. What needs to be looked at is the safety of others and how the stewards thought the best way was to barge and be ruthless.

Even after going to the back and chatting to them they still didn't know why they had to get him.
I think their needs to be a search policy and if they want to search they have a set way of doing it. 1) on entry if suspected.
2) If they think you have something, stay calm, explain and most of all don't be heavy handed. Genuine people with nothing to hide will not give two hoots about being patted down on the way into the ground, but pulling them away from the action on 'clueless Jones' say so is never going to go down well is it.

Common sense is all the situation needed.

I don't disagree, but sounds to me like a certain not so goodcop might have been in touch with you? If I'm right I wouldn't believe everything you're told.

Harassment.

The steward may use such force that is reasonable in the circumstances for the prevention of crime. I think the stewards have acted poorly on both home games this season and something needs to be done

After re-reading his post again the thing that struck me was that he seemed unwilling to be searched at the moment the Steward thought he had something, but then only after he left the scene & returned was he now willing to comply, to me its down to (A) He was shocked initially and refused on the spur of the moment then upon reflection reconsidered or (B) He ditched whatever he had then returned to comply.
Thought that myself. Maybe Trevor and co were right.
Mike, perhaps he's strong on civil liberties?

I've refused to be searched by a police officer before (because they were asking without good reason, so it was an optional search) Why? Because I don't believe people should be searched without good reason. I would do so again in future, as I think the police try to blur the line between the powers they do have, and the powers they'd like to have, by not explaining themselves fully.

Perhaps the OP refused on principle, then re-evaluated once he realized it wasn't a police search being requested, but a private organisation requesting a search before entering the premises: a slightly different concept. Or perhaps he just decided after the initial shock of having his privacy invaded that he didn't actually mind all that much, since he had nothing to hide and considered it a price to pay for watching his team.

All a bit political, I'll grant you, but I for one won't hand over my right to a private life without harassment without good cause.

Perhaps their photographic memory wasnt on point
Good point, always makes sense to pick someone random from a set group of people and make a complete hash of it if all else fails...

This could well be the case, I was not saying he was out & out guilty, just suggested a scenario just like yours here.

The OP may have been shut out of the ground because...
Official Website Ground Rules wrote:The Club Management reserve the right to refuse admission to, or eject from, the ground any persons who refuse to be searched by a servant or agent of the Club or police officer.
Doesn't explain reason for it all in the first place. :?
