Not at all. We are playing decent football now. It just didn't go our way today. Keep the faith.

Think you're both right. We didn't get the rub of the green today but it was a reality check albeit a different one to what we are used to. What I mean by this is summed up by a comment on the Maidstone forum as follows ".... we could have been the away side, defending in depth, time wasting and generally doing what visiting sides do to us".

Having watched the last two Maidstone away fixtures, this was by far our most dominant performance of the three. However, there is a tendency to believe that because you play the better football then the victory naturally and justly comes with it. It does not. Its far better to watch than the hoof ball of yesteryear but that doesn't mean it will always be effective. Maidstone worked us out particularly in the 2nd half closing the space in the middle of the pitch and playing a high pressing game. This forced us back and this led to errors being committed that could have been punished. Balls were pinged wide but anything into the box was dealt with by a back line that was on average several inches bigger than our front three. Effectively they used old Barrow tactics against us. We might find it more difficult to play against bigger physical sides this season rather than the better footballing ones. You need a blend of both to get out of this division.

Hindle might have has several in the first half when we were guilty of over finessing in the final third. Had he scored one I think the outcome would've been different, but it was not to be. Several players looked a little jaded before the end but they never stopped trying and were still in the ascendency at the end. Burgess up front is clearly not the answer when facing defenders that are twice his size. Jones was noticeably very poor. The Maidstone goal came from the only decent move in the game and otherwise I think a point was probably nailed on. Firth continues to look class.


Lets not get carried away with talk of play-offs. But neither should we regret the change in our style or fear the opposition because of it. This is a team that will respond to love and support. I also think its a team that will do better at home. We must not turn away because occasionally we hit a bit of a brick wall.

Well said. Listening to Evatts post game I think he is well aware of areas that need improving etc, his post game comments are usually honest and spot on.
I assume when Blythe is fit again this will give us another option going fwd as a bigger target man if a plan B is required. We miss Turner at the moment as well.
There is a refreshing honesty with this squad... hope it continues

From Suffolk's summary of the Maidstone game, it sounds similar to my thoughts after the Halifax game, ie - struggled against bigger players and Jones possibly a weakness.

Seems now Teams have got the wind of us and are coming to defend. Yep Manager is rite...we need now to get street wise. Still positive that we will bounce back next Saturday against Braintree.

As long as the football is decent and we have a good share of matches which is what seems to be happening at the moment the results will be O.K. Does anybody know what has happened to Astley Mulholland. I know he was injured but it seems ages since he was mentioned anywhere even though reports of the other injured players have been mentioned.

One thing I hadn't noticed about us until I read the Maidstone forum was about how Dan Jones has towels strategically placed along the touchline so he can wipe his hands/the ball for doing the long throw-ins. At HT yesterday Maidstone collected all the towels in and was noticeable how we didn't do as many long throw-ins as we usually do in the second half. Sounds like they did their homework on us on that one.

Maybe they took the towels in as they were not to the stipulated league thread count. Would of been a nice gesture to launder and tumble dry them before returning them at the end.
Another game where we never threw the towel in will do for me!
