Surely the only difference is how deep the owners pockets are ? Principle is the same isn’t it ?
Think it’s all about perspective. Outspending clubs with a budget of 200-300k in NL and outspending football league clubs with a budget of upwards 2-3 million is quiet a difference for a team in the league below.
So you telling me that when Andy Cook was released by Grimsby he wouldn’t have had bigger clubs than us looking at him - yet signed for us in the conference north

Jason Walker the same?

It’s the way of football, clubs with more money than others will spend it, we’ve done it in the past and it’s happened to us a good few times too

So what you’re basically saying is you’re happy when we are doing it but you hate it when other clubs do?

From what I can gather in this case the thing was initiated by the player and once that happens commercial forces then tend to take over. The best option - Quigley stays - is not available any more and it then becomes about the best deal. Thats just how this business works.

There is a certain irony in that money is now being thrown about like confetti by two NL clubs in Wrexham and Stockport both of whom have very nearly been bankrupted in the recent past by financial mismanagement but in football you dont always pay for your past mistakes. Sometimes it is claimed that money is destroying the football pyramid but in reality the supply of money is probably the only thing keeping the pyramid alive. The fact that some have more of it than others helps perpetuate the sterotypical way that clubs are run but is just the by-product of the system we operate. Indeed so ingrained into the business culture of football is the free flow of short-term finance that without it many of the EFL/NL clubs would simply not now exist. Some may be of the opinion that greed is good others that it is simply not fair. But its what we have and you cant really blame clubs or players for exploiting ithe system's "weaknesses" for their own benefit.

The only place I draw the line is where the sudden injection of wealth into a small number of clubs creates forces that ultimately challenge the partiality of rules and regulations within a League. To me this is much more threatening than a clubs current liquidity. Its of particular concern in the NL where the administrative cohesion and structures have really broken down over the last couple of years with the NL being essentially propped up by the FA. As a result there is a definite split appearing between the haves and have nots and this inevitably creates political advantage to a small number of clubs.

So while I dont think you will or perhaps should try to radically change the financial models that drive football simply because the cure would kill so many clubs I am in favour of independent regulation of "elite" football to ensure that financial advantage cannot be translated into political influence. None of this would've prevented Quigley from seeking a more lucrative future for himself though. We have to put this disappointment to bed.

This was a tweet from Quigs a couple of days ago:
Now dust has settled wanted to thank @Steve83Whiston for getting my @StockportCounty deal over the line [Thumbs up] nice to know there’s genuine agents out there.
to which one correspondent - with a straight face - replied:
[Whiston]'s such a top bloke and refreshing to see an agent that's genuinely not in it for the money, very much in the ethos of Stockport County Football Club...
Don't let the old man in.

Footballers have very little loyalty but in all honesty why should they?
Evatt tells of his time with Blackpool and
how Southampton put a offer in for him a but oyston refused to let him go.
The next season he was got rid off because he was injured.
Both did a job for us but we do need a decent striker even if he is only here for one season

What you can do is say Scott we appreciate your situation and are quite willing to release you from your contract so long as either you or your shyster mate Whiston can find a club willing to pay us 500k upfront.

And talk about refusing to train and play are concerned given what was already public his only way of doing that [ by persuading his GP to give him a sick note ] would have been very difficult as it is pretty certain that in the player's contract will be a clause that entitles the club to have a specialist in whatever he was claiming was wrong with him examine him and if he provided a report saying he disagreed with the GP.s assessment then at the next renewal of the " sick note " to sign him off again the GP would have to go against the consultant's opinion and in the world of medicine that's not how it's done.

Accrington had this problem with Billy Kee although slightly different in that nobody thought that he didn't have issues or that BK was trying to engineer a move He just wanted out as he couldn't take the pressure anymore but doing that meant AS would lose a major value asset. As I understood it they assisted him to get for lack of a better word " certified " which meant they were able to claim insurance wise. In return, he can't change his mind and play at any level higher than he is now without his new club repaying the insurance company what they paid out.

I.m not sure i.d of played it the way Hornby has I think i.d of tested him first knowing that he simply couldn't have refused to play and train I believe [ if he openly did that without being " signed off " ] a club can stop a player's wages after 2 weeks and then you come to what happens a year down the line when his contract expires if he's stayed away and you.ve not paid him for a year what's to stop you offering him a new contract at a pound a week more which means [ even tho he.s out of contract ] you can refuse to release his playing registration meaning his career and earnings are at a stop.

My Guess is Hornby will have accepted a fee that gives them as much as they could get without getting into legal and tribunals the cost of which could very quickly reach 100k so I reckon he.ll have wanted 250 but settled for the 150k release fee as has been mentioned to avoid the hassle and the outside possibility that he could end up with a victory but having spent the 250k to get it.

But now we come to Stockport and their undisclosed fee scam if what they actually paid for Maddern was to be the highest fee they've ever paid for a player who do they list as their record signing without either divulging it or lying to all and sundry ?

And to finish I really don't want to [SwearFilter] on your parade but i.ve seen Zanzala play for 3 different clubs over I think its 6 years and if I was a scout doing my homework on him my conclusion would be not to touch him with a barge pole the phrase I think is " flatters " to deceive and with the service, he got at both Accy and Carlisle he should have scored twice the goals that he did. And please don't believe you got him for any reason other than the following its pretty sure that players at the end of their contracts at Carlisle are now placed into one of three groups Group A Definitely want to re sign so happy to offer a rise in wages from the misery amount that they no doubt originally signed for. Group B Happy to keep them if they're stupid enough to sign again for the misery sum they did before. Group C Want to get rid of for whatever reason Offer them no increase on the original wage which will have been totally crap in the first place. Bennet is the perfect example signed for next to nothing to get back playing again with a manager he knew wouldn't take the [SwearFilter] out of him and who he would know couldn't pay any more than they offered him. No doubt Beech promised them the earth when it came round to a new contract but what he didn't do was explain to them what Holdsworth's role would be. And guess what it all ended up in tears and acrimony with the player making his offer public and DH telling him where to go.

I genuinely hope you find someone to replace Quigley and not rely on Zanzala and that you have a season to remember in the League in front of your own fans at last.
So, we got Zanzala because Carlisle 'found him out' and didn't want him then !!.
No not at all Beech clearly wanted him to stay [as he did Bennett ] But then Holdsworth gets involved and plays hardball with the players and what they're willing to offer them and in Zanzalas case that was supposedly a rise of less than 100 quid a week on the very low amount he signed for last year its a way of working that stinks and ultimately can never be good for team morale or supporter engagement for that matter.

Holdsworth is pretty universally hated amongst the fans because its clear that all he's doing is saving an amount of money each season which means the directors get out of putting a penny in but not sure how appreciated he.ll be now that the club have to fund his wages as there's no EWM to do it which was what originally happened.

You should thank your lucky stars that your board work in a completely different way and dont have anyone remotely like Holdsworth turning your club into more of a laughing stock with every season that he,s there.

Can`t get a start at Stockport but will at Rochdale who need to start winning games, at least he has stayed in the EFL rather than dropping down to the National League, but just another ex-player moving on.

Rochdale just desperately trying to acquire any assets they can. He’ll score a few for them but they look like a broken squad atm. He may give them a few good days but there are likely to be a lot of bad ones Quigley or no Quigley.

Some posters on here will be bemoaning that fact that Q somehow hasn't managed to find his way back here. Did well for us for a centre forward who couldn't/can't head the ball, but he's history, a reasonable part of our history, but definitely time to move on.

Reasonable part of our history? We wouldn’t have gone up without him, some of his goals in that season such as the lob against Torquay wouldn’t have looked out of place in the premier league.

The goals he scored to keep us up were just as important. A Barrow legend . Gone never to be forgotten.
