I remember running down Ramsden St to Joe Wardmans Newsagents around 4:40 & usually there were a small cluster of men, lads waiting on the delivery of the Pink Final NWEM

There was a green sports paper on a Saturday that was delivered (yes, those were the days) on Saturday evening about 6pm, which had a full match report written, if I recall correctly, by Bob Herbert. This was particularly useful for away games, as I was normally at Holker Street for the home games.

This was in addition to the usual daily newspaper which arrived about 4pm on Saturday and included the half time scores in the 'stop press'.

The 'Pink 'un' was, I believe, the Lancashire Evening Post sports paper.

Bob Herbert was a proper reporter unlike some of the ones we have today,who glean their stories off the internet rather than the leg work that the likes of Bob used to do.I can remember a few years ago in the Cross Keys in Barrow where myself and a couple of friends used to meet up with Bob on a Friday night to discuss football and the progress or otherwise of Barrow AFC over a couple of pints.He was a very knowledgeable person to talk to.

Quick search has turned up the NWEM Green Sports final from the Cup game v Southampton in 1967. It is faded now, of course and the scan of the green paper makes it look quite pink so I have added the Sports Echo from Southampton that night for a comparison of green and pink, decades on.

The pre-match special of the NWEM was pink!

As a retired member of the paper boys guild (joe Wardman 1961 Billy Dixon - Westmorland St 1962-64) I am certain that during my time the sports mail was pink though it may have changed later. Always remember Keith Eddy used to be stood on the doorstep waiting for his after a home game obviously keen to see if he'd got a good write-up

I’m like a dog with a bone with this one, ha - so did the North Western Saturday evening sports paper start off as Green and then over the years become a Pink version ?

Pink was the Evening Post IIRC.

A lot of years have passed and a lot of alcohol has passed though the veins since, but my recollections (which may vary) are that in my early days it was the Green mail, then at some point it became "The Pink" sports final. Probably looking back some attempt at a re-launch. Some people were a bit hacked off at the change - but it didnt make much difference to me (being colour blind!!). As a delivery boy in Dalton winter Saturday evenings were almost exciting, waiting for the van to screech to a halt outside Harry Snell's, then about a dozen of us set off in all directions. In the summer though, because they didnt have to wait for football results the sports final would come earlier, so you could deliver the normal Evening Mail and the sport edition at the same time.. From memory the football reports were pretty detailed for the fist half, but often a bit more broad brush few sentences for the second half - time pressure I guess. Sometimes the report didnt even run to the end of the match (maybe away matches) and you had to get confirmation of the final score from the late news/stop press section which was on the bottom of the back page, and for some reason printed at right angles to the rest of the paper.. Well that's how I remember it..!!

Yep, it was definitely green in the late 1960s. May have gone to pink in the early 70s, but I don't recall that being the case.

Green until early NPL I suspect, then changed to pink. Here's a couple of supportive examples (from inauspicious moments in our history). The first is the infamous Sports Final announcing our expulsion from the FL in 1972 and it was green (though somewhat faded). The second from early 1974 is very clearly pink and reports on the end of Stuart Liddell's time at Barrow.

Yes definitely green then turned to pink ,I used to deliver them !, I was always amazed how sometimes they had photos from the away game.
