Certainly ticks a lot of boxes. Holds all the relevant coaching licenses achieved as one of the youngest in the game. Worked with big clubs in this country and a succesful spell in the states before leaving Rangers. Was reported to be on Plymouths' short list before Rooney got the gig.Biggest drawback might be geography. Only ever worked down south and abroad before Rangers plus his wife plays for Millwall Lions.

Jonty notes that (he has) "seen us with 70% possession with Evatt and get beat because passing it around in your own half isn’t hurting teams". He must also have seen us win many times under Evatt with a very high percentage of possession. (A bit like quoting Man City's high possession in today's Cup Final to suggest it isn't an effective tactic, despite the evidence of the rest of this season)

Yes more often than not Evatt’s team was great to watch, I am just saying there’s more than one way to play the game and get results and it can be equally frustrating watching your team play possession football but getting nowhere.

Ian Evatt is an interesting case in point. When he went to Bolton they already had a Director Of Football. However, this role was subsequently dispensed with to accommodate Evatt's command and control style. So does his subsequent success indicate that you dont need a DoF?

Well on the face of it I suppose it might. He got them promoted and into the L1 play-offs. Cant argue with that. But on closer inspection the answer is less obvious. His current position is a little tenuous and more than a little exposed. His current role seemingly makes him influential in everything from recruitment, transfers, coaching, development, all kinds of human resources issues, as well as being the primary go to for media and communications. None of these accountabilities change because problems occur in one particular area.

Bolton have also just appointed a new Director of Finance. So does Evatt have a "dotted line" reporting responsibility into him? Who sets budgets? Who negotiates contracts? Who manages Accounts? Same with Sales & Marketing? Same with Corporate Communications? Bolton are a company owned entity who are used to running business processes. How does that square with Evatt's view of the world? It does not.

So my instinct tells me that in his current incarnation, Evatt has probably gone as far as he can. Bolton will inevitably realise that the very reason they wanted him (a saviour) when they were plummeting towards oblivion is the reason they will no longer need him. And when he does go I suspect they will quickly re-appoint a DoF to work with a coach.

PW was increasingly giving out subtle signals in press releases and interviews that he might be struggling with aspects of the role (as he saw it) and relationships and these things clearly affected his mood. He began to seem a little naieve, a little petulant and ultimately it affected the one thing we know his role required - delivery of performance on the pitch. He was not undermined as far as I can see. He was the architect of his own downfall.

Apologies I wasn’t aware you had exclusitivity on what constitutes a thread or otherwise. The other thread was about the possible departure of PW. This is about the possible appointment of a replacement, you don’t have to read it. It may well be meaningless, it may well be not, time will tell I guess. I actually hope it proves to be a meaningless thread but my gut informs differently, one statement from the club would surely put us all in a better place. Keep smiling
