You don’t need a football background to be a great DoF. In fact that’s the point. The skill set needs to be much broader. And actually being able to deal with agents is an important element of that skill set.

That’s the conundrum with wanting just a coach. When you really examine what you really want it’s really a “coach plus”. There are definitely some managerial traits in there too.

It’s the reason why this DoF/ Coach relationship is so difficult to make work.

While it’s new for us and other clubs at this level the DoF model has been standard for many years in the upper two levels of the game and it’s clearly filtering down as new methods generally do over time.

We’re even seeing clubs starting to further develop that model with a whole team of people doing what a traditional manager would do - I suspect this is what’s behind Vincent Kompany appointment at Bayern Munich; he’s a front man to be wheeled out for the cameras essentially a figure head on the touch line while most of the decisions are made by others.

It’s the way football is moving and in 20 or so years we could be seeing management and coaching “teams” at this level.

In my view we should stick with it, let’s modernise the club as we head in to the mid 21st century.

Took over a team in 8th got them to 12th and won 2 home league games in 2024.
A good fit.

A lot of Gillingham fans thought he was harshly treated when sacked. Took over in November and Wasn't supported in his first window for the club in January had to get 4 out to bring 4 in and some would like to have seen him given a summer window to improve the team The common consensus is that he is a nice guy.

When you look at some of the well known managers we appointed, Dunn,Cooper,Brown none where trail blaizers.
Evatt was hungry for success as was Wild.
I would look at a Manager working his way up the leagues.
The Altrincham Manager seems to fit that.
Not sure if he is ready but weve gone for the so called big names and its not worked.

A Manager from a National League club will know players in that league and hopefully beable to pick a few gems up plus i dont think there is much difference in the leagues.

Let's wait and see. If it is clemence then he will surely have a lot of contacts throughout the game and plenty of coaching experience.
I don't think you can read much into his short spell at gillingham as he wasn't backed in the transfer window. Our Dof has done a pretty good job of sorting out the signings so far so let's give SC a fair crack of the whip if it is him.

You could always compare the seasons since his appointment with those immediately before.

Don't know who it will be, but from the names mentioned, and as a lifelong Evertonian (BAFC ST holder for many years, don't worry) I would love it to be Leighton Baines. The man oozes loyalty and class. He's ready for his first managerial post IMO.
