Some players react and play better under a new manager, who knows how they were told to play and what tactics they were given.
Clean slate for me under a new man for any that have [SwearFilter] me off this season.
Agree. Unfortunately I'm not sure that we actually know how good or bad some of our players are. Its been apparent for some time that the type of effort and commitment that we got used to under Evatt was not forthcoming, for whatever reason, under Dunn. In fact some of our players that were perceived previously as more limited seem to do better under Dunn and others who had previously thrived seem to have gone backwards. Always a sign that something is not right and perhaps that players were being individually coached rather than collectively managed.

Kelly has also been something of an enigma since he arrived. His CV is much better than what we've been seeing. I'm left to wonder whether that too was down to a less than productive relationship with Dunn. Or perhaps the fact that Dunn at heart was always more of a coach than a manager. So I'm quite open to the idea of letting Kelly have the reins for a few games just to see whether he can free up the players mindsets. Hes done it elsewhere. It cant do any harm.

In many ways the role for an incoming manager is more simple than it was for Dunn. There was so much expectation (rightly or wrongly) generated after last year. Evatt was a tough act to follow in that respect. The task is now much more straightforward for the next incumbent - do whats necessary, deliver enough points, keep us up.

very true - even if we had been midtable now some would have been disappointed after last season - taking the job after Evatt was a poison chalice that someone had to drink from - unfortunately for Dunn it was him.

With Kelly in charge at least in the short term things may depend on what happens in those games - for example if we go on and beat Scun thorpe and Cheltenham then the pressure is off short term and Kelly could be given the job and it would change from who will be the manager to who will come in to assist him. Whilst this might have some people thinking of Moore there is a gulf of difference between Moores experience and management history and Kellys.

That’s that then.
I’ve a hunch the BoDs will be hoping Kelly can do a Solskjaer and be reasonably successful in the short term and maybe put himself in contention for a more permanent deal. That would be win/win; two words we have not heard much of late.

Danny Grainger every time for me, got to know him when he was at CUFC, not surprised in the least he's doing so well at Reds, players listen, he is the one that 'gees' them up, gets them playing, and him being a Penrith/Appleby lad takes absolutely no prisoners.
If Beech was to leave the mighty Blues (hope not), then personally I would have little hesitation of giving him the United job.
Re Grainger I don’t think we can afford to ‘gamble’ again we need a safe pair of hands now. I like listening to your man Beech, he is quirky and doesn’t do any cliched platitudes in interviews. He goes off on whimsical tangents and the interviewer has to pull him back to talk football again. As an aside he seems to know what he’s doing and is getting results.

I am not sure that Solskaer is a shining example of step up from caretaker to permanent. I don't know anything about Kelly's capabilities but there must be a reason why he has always been an assistant or caretaker rather than a permanent manager.

Everybody seems to be just assuming Kelly would want the job. Given where he's worked previously, I'm pretty sure he only came to us to help his mate Dunn out. I'd be surprised if he was interested in the job permanently.

Even if he was, I wouldn't want the job giving to him. There are plenty of actual managers out of work who fit the bill of what we need far more closely.

Solskjaer has managed United for two years now, they are currently 8th in their league, you'd take that Jim wouldn't you?
And apologies to Chipmunx who made a similar point re Kelly in a previous post that I didn't read til now.

andyg wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 5:09 pm To be honest we must not rush into making quick decisions now. I'm glad we've appointed Rob Kelly as temporary/caretaker manager as he has a wealth of experience doing such a role. You only have to look at his Wikipedia entry to see that. If he does well over the short term then that's good it might be, going forward, he takes us to the end of the season and hopefully safety then we can re stock. If things don't go well he has given us breathing space to look at what is available & how we approach the rest of the season. What we don't want is a knee jerk reaction if we don't do well in the next couple of games and make poor decisions. I hope the forum also has a bit a patience (but I'm not holding my breath). The ones who wanted rid of Dunn have got what they want but they should support Kelly and the team now before the next major decision is made.
In your statement you mention the ones who "wanted rid of Dunn". So you never wanted rid then eh!.
Happy to go with the flow are you?.

Yes-you probably wouldn't indeed hesitate but-Carlisle would.
There is no way that Carlisle would hand that job from someone from that far down the leagues.

I don't follow United but a very close member of my family does and she is very frustrated with Solskaer. I think, from what I have heard, it is the boring football as much as anything else - and the fact that she is used to them competing in the top 5

Got to be Danny Grainger.

Before Dunn was appointed it was said that the board had someone else in mind but he was never approached. Wonder who that was?
